The west pier of Dún Laoghaire harbour was constructed between 1820 and 1827 and measures at 1,548 metres. The west and east piers make up the Dún Laoghaire harbour – one of the biggest and most developed marinas in Ireland. The marina is home to 820 berths for visiting sea-faring vessels of all shapes and sizes.

The marina and surrounding promenade is also a very popular destination for walkers, joggers and tourists who come to take in the sea air, get some invigorating exercise and enjoy the scenery.

Starting at the Marine Activity Centre and site of the old Nautical College, follow the walkway around by the Motor Yacht Club and then onto the long narrow stretch that is the pier proper. Looking to your right you can see bustling Dún Laoghaire Marina, the Traders’ Wharf and the old Ice Plant which is now a fish shop.

As the pier starts to veer around to the right you’ll be nearing the west breakwater and the Dublin Sailing Club starter’s hut. From here you might be able to see sailors hoisting their sails and making headway around the bay.

As you get closer to the end of the walk you’ll come to the house of the lighthouse keeper and then to your ultimate destination, the West Pier Lighthouse, constructed in 1852 and automated in 1930.
