ANGLESEA ROW THE REAL STREETS OF DUBLIN

ANGLESEA ROW PHOTOGRAPHED IN JUNE 2019 [AT THE TIME KEELINGS WAREHOUSE WAS BEING DEMOLISHED]

Anglesea Row is a laneway connecting Little Mary Street to Little Britain Street.

The City Markets area is located between Henry Street and the new urban quarter of Smithfield. This area is centred around the old Victorian Fruit and Vegetable Market on Mary’s Lane, Dublin 1.

In June 2019 when I photographed in the area I noted that a 343-unit Aparthotel was to be built here but the project had been delayed. As a result of the potential for human remains on the site the city Council ordered the omission of the basement of the development and further archaeological work to be carried out to search for the potential human remains. I do not know the current status of the project but building had resumed was ongoing until the most recent lockdown [Jan 2021].

Back in 2003 planning permission for the following was granted: "Former warehouse at the junction of Little Mary Street and Little Green Street and to the South Anglesea Row, Dublin 1. Proposed development: Demolish existing warehouse and erect a mixed-use development consisting of a creche and six retail units, 504 sq m (5,425 sq ft) of office units, 68 apartments and 22 live/work units in three blocks. Applicant: Keelings Limited."

To add to the confusion last September [2018] Dublin city council gave permission to a company called Carra Shore Hotel (Dublin 7) Ltd to build a 195-bedroom hotel on a site at the junction of Little Britain Street and Little Green Street which is at a different corner of the same block.

Keelings started producing fruits and salads in the 1930’s supplying produce to local Dublin markets. The Company has expanded greatly over the years and now operate five divisions – Keelings Retail, Keelings Fresh, Keelings Market, Keelings International and Keelings Solutions. The company is still headquartered in Ireland but has operations in the UK and is currently expanding into France and other countries in the EU.
