I HAD DIFFICULTY DECIDING WHAT WAS ABOUT This was photographed in August 2021 Using a Sony A7RIV with a Sony FE 70-200MM F2,8 GM Lens. Tucked away on a green-rendered utility building in Ferrybank, on the northern side of the River Suir, this piece by Dublin-based Polish illustrator Magdalena Karol offers a gentle, whimsical counterpoint to the larger-scale industrial murals across Waterford. Painted as part of the Waterford Walls festival, the composition centres on a delicate illustrative figure set against a glowing circular disc. Carrying or inhabiting a wooden nest box backpack, the character reaches outward toward a tiny winged visitor. Karol’s signature technique—distinguished by fine, textured hatching and soft pastel tones of violet, mint green, and pale ochre—creates an intimate, storybook atmosphere. Framed by neighbourhood lawns and a planted flower boat nearby, the artwork integrates into Ferrybank’s community landscape. Artist: Magdalena Karol (Polish illustrator and visual artist based in Dublin) Subject / Description: Known informally as Girl with a Birdhouse Backpack. It depicts a stylised female figure emerging from or carrying a wooden birdhouse/nesting box within a pale circular halo, rendered with cross-hatched, illustrative textures. Context: Painted for the Waterford Walls International Street Art Festival on a local utility/substation building in the Ferrybank residential area. Visual Style: Karol's signature style blends whimsical narrative illustration, surreal folklore elements, and textured line shading, often exploring themes of human connection with wildlife and nature.
