Navigating the Archive: The Global Finder

Before mobile phones and ubiquitous digital mapping, getting lost was a distinctly tangible experience. Missing a turn in an unfamiliar district meant relying on physical landmarks, paper maps that never quite folded back correctly, or the local knowledge of a passerby. Once you lost your bearings, recovering your position took time, patience, and a bit of intuition.

Navigating a massive digital archive can feel remarkably similar. With hundreds of thousands of images documenting the shifting layers of the built environment, it is easy to wander deep into a specific urban study or historical timeline and lose sight of the broader horizon.

To ensure you never find yourself stranded in the digital backstreets, we have built a site-wide compass local to our platform: The Global Finder.

Look for the Torch

Throughout your journey across this site, you will occasionally cross paths with a familiar figure from the pre-digital era: an old-school cinema usher pointing his torch into the dark.

Lost your bearings? Click the usher's torch anywhere on the site to instantly drop back onto our global, image-based index.

Just as a theater usher guided patrons safely to their seats in a darkened auditorium, this shortcut cuts through the noise. It brings you directly to a bird's-eye view of the entire catalog on a standalone page, allowing you to instantly recalibrate your journey, reset your coordinates, and resume your exploration of the urban landscape.
