JOHN'S LANE WEST

JOHN'S LANE WEST

JOHN'S LANE WEST NOW HOME TO NCAD [13 SEPTEMBER 2025]

The last two days did not go well for me as my Q3 crashed yesterday I lost about 100 images from SD Card and I had devoted a lot of time and effort to the images in question asI was trying to develop my macro photography skills. Today I decided to forget about the Q3 for a week or two and use the Fuji GFX100RF but the setting were incorrect by it was my fault. To make a long short I was less than delighted by the quality of the resulting images.

John's Lane West is intrinsically linked to the National College of Art and Design (NCAD) as it defines a key boundary of the college's main campus in Dublin 8.

NCAD, Ireland’s primary institution for art and design education, occupies a large, complex site in The Liberties, centred on the historic former Powers Distillery on Thomas Street. While the college's famous arched entrance and administrative centre front onto Thomas Street, the campus extends significantly backward (southward) from this main thoroughfare.

John's Lane West runs adjacent to the western and southern perimeter of this campus. It is not merely a neighbouring street; it provides essential access to several of the college's key faculties. Entrances to the dedicated buildings housing departments such as the School of Design (including Visual Communication, Industrial Design, and Product Design) and the Media departments are located directly onto, or accessed via, John's Lane West and the adjoining NCAD Annex area.

Consequently, the lane, though narrow, functions almost as an external campus corridor. It is heavily trafficked by students and staff moving between studios, workshops, and lecture theatres, connecting the core distillery buildings with the more modern annex structures. Both NCAD and John's Lane West are central elements of the historic and creative character of The Liberties neighbourhood.
