HERBERT SIMMS AND CHANCERY STREET 06/09/2025

The appointment of Herbert George Simms as Dublin Corporation’s first dedicated Housing Architect in 1932 was no routine administrative decision. It was a profound response to a multi-generational crisis that had reached a critical breaking point. The housing programme Simms was to lead was more than a mere construction project; it represented a foundational element of post-independence state-building—a direct and urgent intervention designed to remedy decades of systemic failure and address a humanitarian catastrophe that shamed the new nation. To understand the monumental scale and significance of his work, one must first comprehend the depths of the urban squalor he was tasked with eradicating.
