I WANTED TO PHOTOGRAPH THE CHURCH AT TULLY

September 5, 2023 by infomatique

BUT WAS SURPRISED TO DISCOVER A NEW TOWN

Today I got a tram to Laughanstown and on my arrival discovered a new complex of not fully completed roads and much to my surprise there many people waiting at the stop for the tram back to the city centre. Also, I was disappointed when I realised that the DP3 Quattro was not the most suitable camera and it did not have GPS so I have no option but to visit again within the next few days.

Laughanstown is a stop on the Luas light-rail tram system in Dún Laoghaire – Rathdown, south of Dublin, Ireland. It opened in 2010 as a stop on the extension of the Green Line south from Sandyford to Brides Glen. The stop provides access to the nearby suburb of Cabinteely.

The stop was intended to serve a new suburb being developed during the Celtic Tiger. A lack of subsequent development in the vicinity resulted in Laughanstown being the least used stop on the Luas Network. As of 2023, the land around the stop is again under development and new roads have been constructed close to the stop.

Some time ago a lady contacted me to advise me that is is Loughlinstown not Laughanstown she was incorrect as they are two different places. Laughanstown: The spelling of this name has varied considerably over time, and in some periods was almost indistinguishable from Loughlinstown, the name of which also varied. The spelling Laughanstown was adopted and fixed at the time of the original Ordnance Survey in the 1830s. However, the evidence suggests that the name used locally was Lehaunstown, and this was noted by the Boundary Survey in the 1820s. Local usage did not change as a result of the Ordnance Survey’s attempt to impose a new spelling.

IS IT ATTRACTING ANTI-SOCIAL ACTIVITY

July 30, 2023 by infomatique

THE BROADSTONE TRAM STOP

I can use either one of two tram stops near me and I usually choose the one at Broadstone as the one on Dominick Street is less than safe because of ongoing drugs dealing in the immediate area (especially tho old flats). If your search online you will find many negative comments about this particular stop. I have not encountered any specific incidences at this location but have encountered problems at the Jervis Tram Stop and at stops along the Grand Canal on the Red Line.

I have a friend who is always very negative and when I brought him to see the new public space, at Broadstone, he said that it would soon become a hub for anti-social activity. I dismissed his prediction but today there was evidence that he might have been correct as there was a group of about ten youths with motorbikes using the area as a racetrack and they were less than competent.

As a result of the above I decided to check if there were any reported problems at the Broadstone Stop and came across the following: In June Professor David Fitzpatrick of TU Dublin wrote after a video was posted of a shocking incident in which students were subject to a tirade of racist abuse at a Luas station near the college’s new Grangegorman campus in the capital. According to the professor many students and staff had reported “incidents of intimidation and anti-social behaviour” at the Broadstone plaza and tram stop.

LUAS TRAM STOP AT BROADSTONE AND THE ENTRANCE TO GRANGEGORMAN UNIVERSITY CAMPUS

April 24, 2023 by infomatique

I USED AN OLD SIGMA CAMERA

I am still experimenting with my old Sigma DP1 Quattro and today, 24 April 2023, I photographed in manual mode and underexposed as the camera was inclined to over expose despite any settings that I make.

In the “Lotus-Eaters” episode of James Joyce’s Ulysses Bloom imagines that the couple leaving the Grosvenor Hotel are “Off to the country: Broadstone probably,” and in Wandering Rocks Mr. Dudley White stands on Array Quay “undecided whether he should arrive at Phibsborough more quickly by a triple change of tram or by hailing a car or on foot through Smithfield, Constitution hill and Broadstone terminus.” Both passages refer to a railway station in the northwest part of inner Dublin, at the top of Constitution Hill between Smithfield and Phibsborough. In 1904 it served as the terminus of the Midland Great Western Railway Company, whose trains went to the west of Ireland.

Broadstone railway station was the Dublin terminus of the Midland Great Western Railway (MGWR), located in the Dublin suburb of Broadstone. The site also contained the MGWR railway works and a steam locomotive motive power depot. The Luas tram station opened at the front of the station in 2017.

It is currently the headquarters of Bus Éireann, housing most of their administration and one of their main garages.[2] Nearby on the same property is a Dublin Bus Depot.

In June 2013, Luas Cross City – a construction project which extended the Luas Green Line North from St. Stephen’s Green to Broombridge – commenced. The line, which opened to passengers on 9 December 2017, traverses the city centre on street-running track and arrives at Broadstone. It then enters into the Broadstone cutting where it continues on its own right of way. Broadstone – DIT is a Luas stop on the line. Its name refers to the fact that it was intended to be the closest stop to Dublin Institute of Technology Grangegorman campus. However, the plans were changed at a late stage, adding Grangegorman stop, which is closer to the campus. Construction of the stop involved excavating a large amount of earth from the land in front of the station, and building a road bridge over the tracks which buses can use to access the depot. The Luas stop has two lateral platforms and is in front of the station building. It was built several metres below the station in order to make it level with Constitution Hill; and a curved, white wall separates the southbound platform from the garden in front of the building. Trams approach the stop from Dominick Street Upper and continues by passing under the new bridge and turning sharply to the right, where they traverse the edge of the bus depot and enter the cutting.

A few years ago i was offered a Sigma DP1 Quattro at a very good price and while I had a bad experience with all my previous Sigma cameras I decided to accept the offer especially as the camera could produce .dng images but, as you may have guessed, there were many problems that can be really annoying. The DP1 Quattro is a fixed lens camera aimed at enthusiasts who demand the best image quality in a reasonably portable form factor. Announced in September 2014, it’s a unique camera in many respects, employing an unusually-shaped body, a fixed focal length lens and a sensor unlike any outside of Sigma’s range. It also eschews modern features we take for granted on other new cameras such as Wifi or even a movie mode. The DP1 Quattro is all about still photo quality.

LUAS TRAM TRAM STOP AT DRIMNAGH

I was on my way to Tallaght but because the tram was too crowed for my liking and as the journey was proving to be unpleasant I decided to get off at the Drimnagh stop. As I was exiting the tram it began to rain. I then took the opportunity to visit the old Goldenbridge cemetery and the immediate area.
