HANOVER QUAY EAST DOCKING STATION 117 AT THE AIRBNB WAREHOUSE HQ BUILDING REF-225479-1

November 27, 2023 by infomatique

THERE IS ANOTHER STATION AROUND THE CORNER ON BENSON STREET

For some unknown reason there is no number plate identify this docking station so I decided to explore the user interface and it showed the location as being Station 117 at East Hanover Quay. There is another docking station very close by on Benson Street.

Housed in one of the last remaining warehouse buildings that were so characteristic of the Dublin Dockands, the new EMEA headquarters building for Airbnb is designed as a workspace for 400 people.

Hanover Quay forms the north boundary of the extensive L-shaped docks that terminated the Grand Canal, next to the mouth of the River Dodder. Constructed between 1757 and 1796, the Grand and Royal canals encircle Dublin city centre and provide navigable waterway connections between the Liffey and Shannon rivers. Despite construction of these deep-water docks, ships continued to berth on the Liffey quays and, with the decline of the Grand Canal, the associated docks followed suit.

Despite alterations to the adjacent quays, the calp limestone walls are retained, in addition to other salient features. The scale and quality of construction of the quay and docks are testament to the ambitions of the Grand Canal Company. It forms an important part of the city’s industrial heritage and is an important reminder of the heyday of the canal era, prior to its demise following the arrival of the railway. The district is now largely redeveloped, focusing on the Grand Canal Theatre.

THE POINT TRAM TERMINUS AND NEARBY

August 16, 2023 by infomatique

NORTH WALL AREA OF DUBLIN

The Point Luas stop is the easternmost terminus of the docklands extension of the Luas Red Line light rail system. This Luas link to Tallaght connects the Point Village to other transport options, including the DART, suburban rail, Busáras, mainline rail, and the future Dublin Metro. The Dublin Port Tunnel southern portal is located nearby.

There are a few entities, at the same location, called “The Point” in Dublin. The most famous one is the Point Theatre, which was a concert and events venue that operated from 1988 to 2007. It was located on the North Wall Quay of the River Liffey, amongst the Dublin Docklands. The Point was closed in the middle of 2007 for a major redevelopment and underwent a rebranding as The O2 in July 2008. The O2 is now a world-class entertainment venue that hosts a wide variety of events, including concerts, sporting events, and conferences.

Another place called “The Point” in Dublin is Point Square. Point Square is a shopping mall and entertainment complex that is located next to the 3Arena. It is home to a number of stores, restaurants, and a cinema. Point Square is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike.

Finally, there is also a tram stop called “The Point”.

LUAS TRAM STOP AT MAYOR SQUARE

May 1, 2023 by infomatique

30 APRIL 2023

Mayor Square is in Dublin, in the Docklands area. The National College of Ireland is based there.

Since December 2009, the Mayor Square – NCI Luas stop has been served by the Luas Red Line tram which runs from Tallaght or Saggart to Connolly and the Docklands branch line from Busáras to The Point (3Arena). Dublin Bus serves nearby North Wall Quay with the 33d, 33x, 53a, 90, 142 and 151 bus services, as well as Guild Street with the 757 Airlink service to Dublin Airport.

On Saturday (29 April) it took me hours to get home as the Luas tram service between Beechwood and St Stephen’s Green was suspended. Passengers were advised that buses were available to transport them from Beechwood to the City Center … this was not true. I went to Ranelagh and was unable to get a bus as all that arrived at the bus stop were already full. After an hour I decided to walk to Leeson Street and had to wait for about thirty minutes for a bus to arrive and then about six arrived at the same time.

THE DOCKLANDS TRAIN STATION

May 1, 2023 by infomatique

UPPER SHERIFF STREET

Services run to M3 Parkway during peak times, Monday to Friday. The station is closed on Saturday and Sunday. Passengers need to change at Clonsilla for connection with the Maynooth service.

Docklands Station is a terminus railway station serving the Dublin Docklands area in Ireland. It is owned and operated by Iarnród Éireann and was part of the Irish Government’s Transport 21 initiative.

The station is one of three termini for the Western Commuter service run by Iarnród Éireann, the others being Dublin Connolly and Dublin Pearse.

The station was officially opened for commuter services by then Taoiseach Bertie Ahern at a temporary location on Sheriff Street in the North Wall area of Dublin’s Northside on 12 March 2007, construction groundbreaking having taken place on 9 March 2006 with Transport Minister Martin Cullen. It is the first new heavy rail station in Dublin city centre since Grand Canal Dock opened in 2001. It was required because the nearby Connolly Station had reached capacity and could not support additional commuter services to County Meath.

However, in March 2008, it was reported that the transport minister, Noel Dempsey, would allow CIÉ to seek new planning permission to keep the station on a permanent basis as a terminus for services from Maynooth and Navan following his decision to allow the Railway Procurement Agency to use Broadstone Station for extensions to the Luas.
