THE PERIOD BETWEEN HALLOWEEN AND CHRISTMAS

Every year at the beginning of November I get the false feeling that I have plenty of time to prepare for Christmas and then it is suddenly Christmas day and I am totally caught by surprise. I mention Christmas because this is a great area for shopping as there are many different and unique establishments where you can spend your money on buying presents for family and friends but if you are not in the humour there are plenty of Pubs and Restaurants.

ST JOSEPH’S ROAD

STONEYBATTER AREA OF DUBLIN

At one of the street there is the Church Of The Holy Family and at the other end there is a derelict shop that ceased trading many years ago and there is a very ugly carwash site on Prussia Street. However, it is a recently trendy street and had been referred as Williamsburg on the Liffey by the Guardian newspaper (Williamsburg is the a trendy area of Brooklyn, New York). Back in 2011 Number 23 St Joseph’s Road was purchased for €255,000 but not long after it was on the market with an asking price of €490,000 (I have no idea how much it would cost to buy now in October 2023).

Stoneybatter is a neighbourhood of Dublin, Ireland, on the Northside of the city between the River Liffey, the North Circular Road, Smithfield Market, and Grangegorman. It is in the D7 postal district. The name dates from at least 1603.

It is often referred to as Dublin’s “hipster quarter” and was in TimeOut magazine’s list of ’40 coolest neighbourhoods in the world’ in 2019.

THE KOREAN TABLE RESTAURANT

The northern end of Stoneybatter derives its name of Manor Street, bestowed in 1780, from the Manor of Grangegorman in which it was located. The Manor itself was later transformed into a police barracks. During the reign of Charles II (1660-1680), the Manor was held by Sir Thomas Stanley, a knight of Henry Cromwell and a staunch supporter of the Restoration. The short thoroughfare in Stoneybatter called Stanley Street is named after him.

Stoneybatter, historically known as Bohernaglogh is a neighbourhood of Dublin, Ireland, situated on the Northside of the city between the River Liffey, the North Circular Road, Smithfield Market, and Grangegorman. It is located in the Dublin 7 postal district. Apart from the striking artisan dwellings, the area is also known for the prominent Viking street names. For example, there is Viking Road, Olaf Road, Thor Place, Sitric Road, Norseman Place, Ard Ri Road, Malachi Road, Ostman Place, Sigurd Road and Harold Road. At the time of the Norman invasion, the Vikings, Ostmen or Austmenn (men of the East) as they called themselves, were exiled to the north of the Liffey where they founded the hamlet of Ostmenstown later to become Oxmantown.

THE KOREAN TABLE

MANOR STREET IN STONEYBATTER

I lived in Korea for a short period of time in the early 1980s and developed an interest in Korean food. However, I never got around to trying the Korean Table restaurant on Manor Street so I paid a visit today just to check it out … I hope to have a meal there this weekend.

Owner’s statement: “Our restaurant didn’t come out overnight. The Korean Table, which started at a food market in Dublin with the mission of making Irish people feel true Korean food, is now offering you the best Korean food at an inexpensive price at a Stoneybatter, which is a little closer to you.”

Korean Table does not accept reservations in order to provide equal dining opportunities to all guests who visit the restaurant.

HENRIETTA LANE HAS BEEN RESURFACED

TO THE SIDE OF AND BEHIND 4 AND 3 HENRIETTA STREET

I photographed this laneway because a very large of road engineers have been on site for almost a week and they had lots of heavy plant and road surfacing equipment.

Until recently it was a little used [except by a few horse owners] laneway off Henrietta Street and it is named Henrietta Lane. It is of interest because became an entrance to a new 380 bed Student Accommodation Complex on Upper Dominick Street which replaced the Michael H textile factory. The complex owned by UK student accommodation provider Ziggurat is now fully operational. I would describe it as being off Henrietta street and it is L-shaped with a section running parallel to Upper Dominick Street. I have noted that a number of old warehouses and unused plots on the lane are now on the market.

I came across the following, somewhat dated, description: No. 4 and the adjoining site were leased by Nathaniel Clements in 1747 to John Maxwell until his daughter married Owen Wynne of Hazelwood, Co. Sligo, who subsequently built this house. Recently stabilised by Dublin City Council the house is in the early phase of a comprehensive programme of conservation works. The interior retains some good plasterwork including an unusually deep coved plaster ceiling to the rear bowed room. The original open-well staircase was removed c.1830 with the secondary staircase retained along with much original joinery and forms part of what has been described as ‘Dublin’s Street of Palaces’ while the ongoing conservation work will no doubt contribute to the improving fortunes of this remarkable streetscape. Laid out by Luke Gardiner in the 1720s, Henrietta Street is a short cul-de-sac containing the finest early Georgian houses in the city and was named after Henrietta Crofts, the third wife of Charles Paulet, 2nd Duke of Bolton and Lord Lieutenant in 1717-21. The street developed in a piecemeal fashion and set the trends of scale and design in domestic architecture.

Restoration of no 3 began in 2016 and took over 2 years to restore to its former glory. It now operates as an upmarket hotel under the name Henrietta Suites.
