The water feature at Bishop Lucey Park in Cork is known as the Swan Fountain. It is a prominent piece of public art that has been a fixture of the park since its opening in 1985.
The fountain was created by the renowned Irish sculptor John Behan to commemorate Cork's 800th anniversary as a chartered city. It features a bronze sculpture of eight swans, which symbolize the eight centuries of the city's history.
Key Features of the Swan Fountain
Symbolism: Each of the eight bronze swans represents 100 years of Cork's history, celebrating the city's 800th anniversary (1185–1985).
Material: The sculpture is crafted from bronze and sits within a stone basin.
Redevelopment: As part of the recent €7 million redevelopment of the park (reopened in late 2024), the fountain was carefully restored and remains a central focal point.
Location: It is situated within the park, which is located between Grand Parade and South Main Street, often passed by those exploring the historic medieval city walls.
Just outside the park's Grand Parade entrance, you will also find the Berwick Fountain. While not inside the park itself, it is a significant 19th-century limestone monument often associated with the area, featuring a tiered design and modern LED lighting that is synchronized with the park's illumination.
