ELLIOTS BAKERY ON EAST ARRAN STREET [THE STORY BEHIND THE GRAFFITI LIKE LOGO]

That unusual bakery featured in my photographs is Elliot's, located at 43 Arran Street East in Dublin 7.

You may think that the branding and logo is weird — it's a deliberate and defining feature of the bakery's unique identity!

The Story Behind the "Graffiti" Logo. The bold, messy, graffiti-like script of "ELLIOT'S" scrawled across the black shopfront is actually a special design feature that directly reflects the name's origin. It's a Child's Handwriting: The wordmark is taken from the actual handwriting of Elliot, the young son of the bakery's founders, Conor Higgins and Amie Costello.

A Balance of Design: The founders wanted to formalise their brand's visual identity, which is why the "messy" script is often applied as a large "supergraphic treatment" on the building's exterior. This design choice creates a balance between "nostalgia and modernity," giving the spot its distinctive, unpretentious, and "unusual" character.

Elliot's is a highly regarded micro-bakery and café, known for its inventive, seasonal menu that changes frequently. The Arran Street East location is their grand bake house, which was notably converted from the former manufacturing arm of the Arran Street East ceramics company.

Food and Atmosphere

The atmosphere is often described as cozy with "lush" decor and friendly staff, offering communal tables for a relaxed experience.

Reviewers consistently praise the quality and balance of their treats:

Must-Try Pastries: Customers rave about the quality of the baked goods. One reviewer said, "They seriously have some of the best pastries I've ever tried (I'm not even exaggerating)... They've nailed the balance of sweetness, not too sugary." Recommended items include the Honey & Salt Croissant, Seasonal Brioche or Pastry, and their generous Almond Croissant.

The Banana Bread: A real star mentioned by many is their incredible banana bread, specifically noted for the addition of tahini and chocolate chips that "make it extra special, and it’s always so moist."

Savory & Sweet: They also offer delicious savoury items like the Pizza Focaccia and highly-rated Ham and Cheese Croissants, alongside sweet favourites like Basque Cheesecake and various Babka rolls.

Coffee: Many also praise their coffee and hot chocolate, with one reviewer noting their chai latte as "hands down the best one I’ve had in all of Dublin."
