THE AREA IMMEDIATE TO THE BROADSTONE TRAM STOP [17 NOVEMBER 2025]

Broadstone is perhaps most famously associated with the former Broadstone Station, which has a rich history as a major railway terminus and subsequently as a tram/bus depot, now transitioning into an academic gateway.

🚌 Broadstone: History and Modernity
Broadstone is located on the northside of Dublin city centre, near Constitution Hill. Its current form reflects a layered history of transport infrastructure:

1. The Old Station: Dublin Broadstone

The Building: The magnificent stone building, originally known as the Dublin Broadstone terminal, was designed by John Skipton Mulvany and opened in 1850. It served as the city terminus for the Midland Great Western Railway (MGWR).

The Decline: Rail services from Broadstone ceased in 1937 as part of the overall rationalisation of the Irish railway network.

Legacy: The original building is an impressive example of Italianate architecture and is protected (a listed structure).

2. Tram Stop and Bus Depots

Tram Stop: While the main trains stopped running in 1937, the area continued to serve as a transport hub. A tram stop on the Dublin tram system (specifically the Luas Green Line) was established and now serves the area. The modern Broadstone - DIT Luas stop (now known as Broadstone - TU Dublin) is located just to the east of the historic station building.

Bus Depots: Following the closure of the rail lines, the former railway yards and infrastructure were largely repurposed by Córas Iompair Éireann (CIÉ) and later by Dublin Bus for use as a major bus maintenance and storage depot. This remains a core function of the area, though some land has been released for development.

3. Gateway to the TU Campus 🎓

TU Dublin: The most transformative recent development is the establishment of the Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin) campus.

New Role: The historic Broadstone Station building and surrounding land were redeveloped to become the core site for the new Grangegorman Campus of TU Dublin.

The Gateway: Broadstone now functions as the main gateway or entry point to this campus, physically and symbolically linking the university to the city's transport network via the Luas tram. This marks a final transition for the site from a transport hub to a major educational and civic centre.
