THE EXTENSION TO MOUNT BERNARD PARK BESIDE THE LUAS TRAM TRACK [CABRA TRAM STOP]

📸 Sneak Peek: The Imminent Opening of the Mount Bernard Park Extension

After years of planning, the extension to Mount Bernard Park in Phibsborough is finally ready! During a recent visit, I was able to walk the entire perimeter of the new section, which lies right beside the Luas tram track. All major work appears completed, with the freshly laid tarmac pathway offering a fantastic new route. The only thing missing is signage.

A Historic Transformation

The project has been a long time coming. Work began earlier this year (2025) to extend the original park northwards into disused lands formerly owned by CIÉ (Córas Iompair Éireann) and later earmarked for the Luas Cross City. This acquisition has been transformative, increasing the size of Mount Bernard Park by over 50% and stretching its boundary all the way to the Royal Canal.

Overcoming Environmental Challenges

The accessible perimeter pathway route you see in these photographs is a testament to clever engineering. Due to the site's previous industrial use, the land beneath was known to contain contamination, including creosote. To manage this environmental challenge, Dublin City Council minimised excavation of the soil. Instead, the new path was laid over the land to effectively cap the contamination, ensuring public safety while simultaneously preserving as much of the existing biodiversity and natural vegetation that had grown across the disused land over the years.

The finished pathway now connects the old park network to this expansive new green space. With construction finished and the site looking pristine, this extension is poised to become a vital public amenity for residents of Phibsborough, Cabra, and the wider Dublin 7 area. Keep an eye out for the official opening—it can't be far away!
