THE REAL STORY
THE GRAVEYARD AT MAYNOOTH COLLEGE [THERE ARE MANY STORIES TO BE TOLD]
This was my first time to use the Leica Q3 and almost everything went wrong, including problems with GPS tracking/tagging.
When I visited the graveyard at St Patrick's College, 9 May 2025, in Maynooth an elderly gentleman that I met there told me that there was a very strong possibility that Bishop Casey could be interred here if he was removed from the crypt in Galway Cathedral. I thought that this would be most unlikely but I decided to investigate the possibility.
Bishop Casey's Remains
Following the July 2024 documentary and a subsequent consultation by the Diocese of Galway, the remains of Bishop Eamonn Casey were removed from the crypt of Galway Cathedral.
This disinterment took place in July 2025. A spokesperson for the diocese stated that the remains had been returned to Bishop Casey's family, who "expressed the wish that the former bishop's final resting place remain private."
The Graveyard at St Patrick's College, Maynooth
The college cemetery at Maynooth, which I visited, was historically established for the interment of priests who either taught at or graduated from the seminary. In more recent times, it has also become the resting place for clerical professors and some lay academic staff associated with the college and university.
There is no public information, news, or official statement to suggest that St Patrick's College, Maynooth, was ever considered as a reinterment location for Bishop Eamonn Casey.
Given that the college graveyard is a known, semi-public location for clergy and academics, it would be a very unlikely choice for a family seeking a "private" final resting place to avoid further public controversy.
Therefore, while the gentleman I spoke with may have been speculating, his claim appears to be unsubstantiated and highly improbable based on all available facts.
