THE 6th LOCK ON THE ROYAL CANAL [SHANDON MILL]

Location: The 6th Lock is situated on the Royal Canal, near where the Shandon Mill used to be, close to the Glasnevin Junction and Crossguns Bridge.

Structure: It is a double lock with ashlar limestone walls, gate recesses, and dressed limestone coping. The lock chamber walls slope up to a middle gate, and the area to the east expands into a canal harbour. It features a replacement timber and mild steel lock gates.
Historical Significance: The lock is an important example of late 18th-century engineering, showcasing quality masonry skills.

Current Use: The lock is still functional and is used for recreation, serving as an important element of Dublin's architectural and industrial heritage.

Surroundings: The lock is part of the Royal Canal's journey through Dublin, with a former lock keeper's house located to the north of the lock.
