There was/is a planning dispute related to the castle but it is way too complicated to discuss here.
The primary structure, Robswall Castle, is a 15th-century rubble stone tower house , a historically significant defensive monument that once commanded the estuary of Malahide. Critically, the structure is designated as a Protected Structure (RPS No. 422) by Fingal County Council. The core of the dispute rests upon a boundary structure, known colloquially as the Robswall, that is located within the complex's immediate setting. Third-party planning appellants specifically contended that the wall designated for demolition forms part of the curtilage of the Protected Structure (RPS No. 422). Under the Planning and Development Act 2000, protection extends to all structures, fixtures, and land within the curtilage.
Despite vigorous local opposition , permission was ultimately granted by An Bord Pleanála (ABP) under case reference PL06F.311242 on 28 March 2023, sanctioning the demolition of unfinished structures and the construction of a substantial 4-storey apartment block and a 2-storey dwelling on the adjacent lands. The resolution of this case suggests that the statutory protection afforded to the curtilage was either insufficiently defined or successfully mitigated during the appeal process.
