ANDERSONS ON CARLINGFORD ROAD WAS TO HAVE BEEN REPLACED BY A FUNERAL HOME [BUT THE BUILDING APPEARS TO BE UNOCCUPIED]

From Café to Vacancy: The Status of 1A Carlingford Road

The premises at 1A Carlingford Road in Drumcondra, formerly the popular Andersons Creperie, has seen significant changes. Following the café's closure, it was slated to become a funeral home. However, the building currently appears to be unoccupied.

Based on my research, here is a summary of the events.

The Closure of Andersons Creperie

The well-regarded Andersons Creperie permanently closed its doors on or just before 23 October 2023. The owners, Trish and Noel, announced the closure with "great regret," describing it as a "really difficult decision." A concurrent property listing for the café's leasehold mentioned that the owners were "semi-retiring."

A New Use: The Planned Funeral Home

Following the closure, works were undertaken to convert the premises from a café into a funeral home and Chapel of Rest, which was set to be operated by a new funeral director.

Planning Refusal and Current Status

Despite the physical alterations, the funeral home is not an active or permitted business at this location.

A retention planning application (Ref: 3907/24) for the change of use from a café to a funeral home was refused by Dublin City Council on 20 August 2024. The primary reason for denying permission was the potential for significant traffic congestion and disruption from crowds in the residential area.

Consequently, the business was not legally permitted to operate from the site. As of late 2025, the building remains unoccupied, and the status of any future plans for the premises is unconfirmed.

A Note on Zoning

As someone who once lived on Carlingford Road, I was disappointed to see Andersons close and was initially surprised by the proposal for a funeral home. This move is somewhat explained by the area's zoning: 1A Carlingford Road is in Zone Z2, which lists funeral homes under "Open for Consideration Uses." This indicates that while such a use was not guaranteed, it was a possibility that the council could have approved, though in this case, it was ultimately refused.
