WHO WAS THE SCULPTOR?

SCULPTURE OF SAINT FIACHRA

I was incorrectly informed that the sculpture of St Fiachra was by Imogen Stuart. So as she died earlier this year I decided to feature some of her sculpture, especially what I had photographed, but I recently received the following correction:

"The Statue of St. Fiachra at the Irish National Stud in Kildare was designed by Professor Martin Hallinan, an award-winning landscape architect. St. Fiachra, the patron saint of gardeners, is depicted in this tranquil garden overlooking a lake. The garden also features a Waterford Crystal sculpture embedded in the floor of a hermitage, reflecting the natural elements of the surrounding landscape.

Fiacre is the name of three different Irish saints, the most famous of which is Fiacre of Breuil (c. AD 600 – 18 August 670), the priest, abbot, hermit, and gardener of the seventh century who was famous for his sanctity and skill in curing infirmities. He emigrated from his native Ireland to France, where he constructed for himself a hermitage together with a vegetable and herb garden, oratory, and hospice for travellers. He is the patron saint of gardeners.

====ORIGINAL POST====

As the sculptor died earlier this year I decided to highlight this sculpture of Fiacre of Breuil which is located in a garden at the National Stud in Kildare.

Imogen Stuart (1927-2024) was a renowned Irish sculptor, and her work encompassed a wide range of subjects, including religious figures and themes. Born in Germany, she moved to Ireland in 1949 and became a significant figure in the Irish art world.

Stuart's work has been exhibited internationally and is held in numerous public and private collections. She was a recipient of many awards and honours, including the Aosdána award for lifetime achievement in the arts.

While Imogen Stuart passed away in March 2024, her legacy as a significant figure in Irish sculpture lives on through her extensive body of work. Her sculptures can be found in public spaces, churches, and galleries throughout Ireland, and they continue to inspire and captivate viewers with their beauty, emotion, and powerful storytelling.

===END===

As I was confused I decide to have my post(s) fact checked and I received the following reply:

The information you received is correct. The sculpture of St. Fiachra at the Irish National Stud was not created by Imogen Stuart.

St. Fiachra's Garden: The garden itself was designed by Professor Martin Hallinan, a landscape architect.

St. Fiachra Sculpture: While the exact creator of the sculpture isn't explicitly mentioned in sources, it's clear that it's not an Imogen Stuart piece. The sculpture is part of the overall garden design by Professor Hallinan.

Waterford Crystal Sculpture: The garden does feature a Waterford Crystal sculpture, but it's a separate piece embedded in the floor of a hermitage within the garden.

Additional Information:

St. Fiachra is indeed the patron saint of gardeners.
Fiacre (or Fiachra) of Breuil was a 7th-century Irish saint known for his sanctity and healing abilities. He is most famous for his hermitage and garden in France.

It's understandable how the misinformation about Imogen Stuart's involvement arose, given her prominence as an Irish sculptor and her work with religious themes. However, it's important to correct the record to give proper credit to the actual designer of St. Fiachra's Garden and its associated sculptures.
