THIS MEMORIAL IS A GIFT FROM FRANCE

As I don't normally visit this section of the cemetery, because I use a different entrance, I was unaware of this memorial until today [2 May 2024]

This evocative memorial in Glasnevin Cemetery honours the tens of thousands of Irish soldiers who died fighting for the freedom of France throughout multiple conflicts.

A gift from France, it features a replica of the wooden Celtic cross erected by the 16th Irish Division during the Battle of the Somme. This cross stands amidst tall, dolmen-like stones inscribed with the poignant words of Marshal Foch, expressing eternal French gratitude for Irish sacrifice.
Three bronze infantry helmets rest on nearby rocks, symbolising the fallen soldiers whose graves shall forever be tended with love.
