MAGUIRE FAMILY AND THE MATCH INDUSTRY

THE MAGUIRE FAMILY AND THE MATCH INDUSTRY

The Maguire family's involvement in the match business began in the 1840s with the Liverpool firm Collard, Kendall & Co., later acquired by the Diamond Match Co. in 1895. Around 1900, they established Maguire, Miller Ltd., operating match factories in Liverpool and Leeds.

In 1919, Maguire, Miller Ltd. merged with Paterson & Co. Ltd. of Dublin and J. Palmer & Son of London to form Maguire, Paterson & Palmer Ltd. The new company built a factory in Garston, Liverpool, and a Canadian subsidiary, Maguire, Paterson & Palmer (Canada) Ltd., to supply match splints to British factories.

In 1922, Maguire, Paterson & Palmer (Canada) Ltd. joined forces with Bryant and May and the Diamond Match Co. (U.S.A.) to create the Canadian Match Co. Ltd., catering to the Canadian market. Later that year, Bryant & May acquired Maguire Paterson & Palmer Ltd., which went into liquidation.

The Dublin operations were transferred to a new entity, Maguire & Paterson Ltd. In 1923, Maguire & Paterson (Belfast) Ltd. was established to serve the Ulster market, later renamed Maguire & Paterson (N.I.) Ltd. in 1939. Bryant and May eventually took over this company in 1959. A non-trading company, Maguire, Paterson & Palmer Ltd., was also formed in 1923.

This complex history illustrates the dynamic nature of the match industry and the Maguire family's significant role in its development. Their ventures spanned multiple countries and involved various mergers and acquisitions, ultimately consolidating under the Bryant and May umbrella.
