UPPER SHERIFF STREET

UPPER SHERIFF STREET - MUCH HISTORY FOLLOWED BY RAPID CHANGE

Located in the heart of Dublin's revitalised Docklands, Upper Sheriff Street is a thoroughfare steeped in maritime history and a vibrant community spirit. Once a bustling hub of activity for dockworkers, the street has undergone a significant transformation in recent years, as derelict sites gradually give way to modern developments and a renewed sense of purpose.

Historically, Upper Sheriff Street served as an important residential street for dockworkers, with connections to the North Wall Quay via Guild Street and Lower Sheriff Street, and to the surrounding neighbourhoods of East Wall and North Strand via Seville Place. The street was primarily residential, housing dockworkers and their families, with some industrial activity due to its proximity to the docks. The iconic steel Scherzer rolling lift bascule bridge, a testament to the area's industrial past, still spans the Royal Canal at the end of the street, once allowing barges and smaller vessels to pass through.

With the decline of Dublin's traditional docklands industry in the late 20th century, Upper Sheriff Street fell into disrepair, with many buildings becoming vacant and derelict. However, the recent redevelopment of the Docklands has breathed new life into the area, attracting investment, businesses, and residents.

One of the most significant changes to Upper Sheriff Street has been the creation of the Royal Canal Greenway, a scenic cycling and walking route that connects the street to the North Strand and beyond. The Greenway has transformed the canal towpath into a vibrant public space, offering a tranquil escape from the city's hustle and bustle.

Despite the positive changes, Upper Sheriff Street still retains some of its industrial character, with several derelict sites and vacant buildings remaining. These sites serve as a reminder of the street's rich history and provide a unique backdrop for the area's ongoing transformation.

The future of Upper Sheriff Street looks bright, as new developments continue to emerge and the community works to preserve its heritage and create a thriving, sustainable neighbourhood. The street is a testament to the resilience of Dublin's Docklands and a symbol of the city's ever-evolving urban landscape.

The 151 bus does travel along Upper Sheriff Street. It is not a new service but an existing route that has been in operation for some time. It is one of the main bus routes connecting Dublin's outer suburbs to the city centre and Docklands.
