FAMINE MEMORIAL
Famine Memorial
By Rowan Gillespie
Sponsored by Norma Smurfit, philanthropist and patron of the arts.
Location
Custom House Quay, Dublin Docklands. This site is historically significant as a departure point for many Irish emigrants fleeing the Great Famine.
Description
The installation features a series of hauntingly emaciated bronze figures in ragged clothing. They appear to be trudging along the riverbank, accompanied by a solitary, starving dog. The sculptures symbolize the desperation and exodus of the Irish people during the devastating famine of 1845-1849.
Additional Notes
- Visit Toronto: A companion memorial with similar figures by Rowan Gillespie is located in Toronto's Ireland Park, marking the arrival point for many famine ships.
- Jeanie Johnston: The replica famine ship "Jeanie Johnston" is moored near the Dublin memorial, adding historical context.
