Famine Memorial by Rowan Gillespie

Famine Memorial

By Rowan Gillespie

Sponsored by Norma Smurfit, philanthropist and patron of the arts.

Location

Custom House Quay, Dublin Docklands. This site is historically significant as a departure point for many Irish emigrants fleeing the Great Famine.

Description

The installation features a series of hauntingly emaciated bronze figures in ragged clothing. They appear to be trudging along the riverbank, accompanied by a solitary, starving dog. The sculptures symbolize the desperation and exodus of the Irish people during the devastating famine of 1845-1849.

Additional Notes

  • Visit Toronto: A companion memorial with similar figures by Rowan Gillespie is located in Toronto's Ireland Park, marking the arrival point for many famine ships.
  • Jeanie Johnston: The replica famine ship "Jeanie Johnston" is moored near the Dublin memorial, adding historical context.
