Mount Jerome Cemetery, located in the heart of the suburb of Harold’s Cross on the south side of Dublin city, is a significant historical landmark. It was the first privately owned cemetery in Ireland, opening its doors in 1836.

Historical Significance

Mount Jerome Cemetery has a rich history. It was the first privately owned cemetery in Ireland and has received over 220,000 funerals for burial since its inception. The cemetery was owned by the General Cemetery Company of Dublin from 1835 until 1984.

Modern Day

In the year 2000, Mount Jerome also became the first privately owned crematorium in Ireland. To date, it has received 25,000 funerals for cremation. The cemetery receives approximately 200,000 visitors annually, making it a significant site of interest.

Location

The cemetery is centrally located near the Grand Canal, facing Harold's Cross Park. It primarily receives funerals from the communities of South Dublin, but also from all over Ireland.
