TALKING HEADS

Talking Heads Sculpture

This three-element sculpture, known as “Talking Heads,” is the work of Irish sculptor Carolyn Mulholland. It’s located on Lower Abbey Street in Dublin. Mulholland is known for her sculptures that often depict moving abstract figures. Her work can be found in many private collections, and public institutions including the Ulster Museum, Armagh County Museum, Royal Ulster Academy of Arts Diploma Collection, and Queen’s University, Belfast.

There is also a plaque at the same location; it commemorates the unveiling of the national flag, which took place in the music hall at this location on Lower Abbey Street on 15th April 1858. The national flag, or tri-colour (green, white, and orange), symbolises the inclusion and hoped-for union of the people from the different traditions on the island of Ireland.

At the time that I first photographed this installation, I noted that it was unfortunate that the sculpture was not in a location that allows it to be easily noticed by passers-by. Public art installations often serve as important cultural and historical markers, contributing to the identity and character of a city. They can also provoke thought and conversation, enriching the public space.

Unfortunately, I can no longer complain about the location as being unsuitable, as the sculpture has indeed disappeared. The good news is that the plaque is still there.
