I WAS UNAWARE OF THIS UNTIL 20 MARCH 2024

A 1914-1919 War Memorial Cross located at Christ Church Leeson Park in Dublin. This Celtic cross memorial stands in the church grounds, facing Leeson Park, and commemorates the parishioners who lost their lives during World War I.

Two inscriptions can be found on either side of the cross:

Northeast side: FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH 1914-1919
Southwest side (facing Leeson Park): The longer inscription, reproduced below, pays tribute to the sacrifice and bravery of those who served and died in the Great War.

The cross is a poignant reminder of the significant impact the war had on the local community. The names of those who died are inscribed on a tablet within the church, as indicated on the memorial itself.

Additional Information:

It stands on a stepped base, adding to its imposing presence.

TO THE GLORY OF GOD
AND IN PROUD AND LOVING MEMORY OF
THE MEN CONNECTED WITH THIS PARISH WHO AT
THE CALL OF KING AND COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR OF
1914 – 1919,
LEFT ALL THAT WAS DEAR TO THEM,
ENDURED HARDNESS, FACED DANGER, AND FINALLY
PASSED OUT OF THE SIGHT OF MEN BY THE PATH
OF DUTY AND SELF SACRIFICE, GIVING UP THEIR
OWN LIVES THAT OTHERS MIGHT LIVE
IN FREEDOM,
THIS CROSS IS ERECTED BY THE PARISHIONERS.
LET THOSE WHO COME AFTER SEE TO IT THAT
THEIR NAMES, WHICH ARE INSCRIBED ON THE TABLET
IN THE ADJOINING CHURCH, BE NOT FORGOTTEN.
“THOU WAST THEIR ROCK, THEIR FORTRESS, AND THEIR MIGHT;
THOU, LORD, THEIR CAPTAIN IN THE WELL FOUGHT FIGHT”
