I noticed that many property advertisements are now stating that Sidney Park is located in the "Victorian Quarter" and I will discuss this below.

Many of the houses to the west, east and to the north-east in Sidney Park, which were built in the 1930s and 1940s. Architectural design and detail are apparent in the irregular form of the building. These houses are representative of domestic architectural design and construction in the 1930s and 1940s in Ireland.

There once was a building named "Government House" in the area. Once the home to the "Governor of the Cork Military District"it was destroyed by fire during events in the city in the early 1920s.

Back in 2019 I was surprised to discover that an area of Cork was being referred to as the Victorian Quarter and after some research I learned that businesses on Cork’s Mac Curtain Street had, in 2017, developed and launched a marketing strategy of referring to their part of the City as the ‘Victorian Quarter‘. It was stressed that the area was named after the Victorian-age buildings. To be honest, I am not convinced that it is a good idea especially as many building in the area are in very poor condition.

A separate non-business grouping which wants to remove references to Queen Victoria in Cork sent a letter to the City Council opposing the spending of public funds on supporting the "Victorian Quarter" marketing scheme. Also, The ‘Cork Street Names Campaign’ have frequently painted over the word Victoria on street signs. They refer to Victoria as the “famine queen” and have blacked out the former British monarchs name from signs including some at Victoria Cross and Victoria Road.
