I used a Sony RX0 which is not much bigger than a matchbox but I made a mistake when I set the time and date by selecting 2022 instead of 2023. In general I would not recommend this camera as it is very cumbersome to use at the best of times.

The Sony RX is the name of a range of fixed lens compact point-and-shoot digital cameras created by Sony in 2012. All cameras are equipped with Carl Zeiss lenses.
The RX0 was released in 2017. It is a small, tough waterproof camera, with a 1″ sensor. It has a 24mm f4 equivalent Zeiss Tessar T* wide angle lens.

The Funerary Chapel in the cemetery was the first Puginian Gothic church in Dublin. It was designed by William Atkins.

The first official burial happened on the 19th of September 1836. The buried deceased were the infant twins of Matthew Pollock.

The cemetery initially started with a landmass of 26 acres and grew to a size of 48 acres in 1874.

In 1984, burial numbers were falling, thus the Cemetery was losing revenue and began to deteriorate. A crematorium was needed to regain revenue and deal with plant overgrowth on the estate. In 2000, Mount Jerome Cemetery established its own crematorium on the site.

May 30th 2019 Alex Findlater died following a riding accident in Punjab, India and headline read as follows: “Mayo man dies after horse riding accident in India”.

In 1823 Alex. Findlater & Co. began trading in Dublin. The company was founded by Alexander Findlater, a hard working spirit merchant. He set up his business on Burgh Quay opposite the Custom House. From humble beginnings, the business grew rapidly and extensively not just in Dublin but into the United Kingdom also, expanding into other fields; trading in Wines, Teas, Coffees and Groceries.

In Dublin, the Findlaters prospered. By 1906, the company had expanded into groceries, tea and provisions, with 14 shops. They built Findlater’s Church on Parnell Square, as well as the Todd Burns department store on Mary Street. Their Mountjoy Brewery, established in 1852, was Dublin’s second-largest exporter of stout by 1866. They also operated hotels in Howth and Bray.

A QUICK OVERVIEW OF AN OLD VICTORIAN CEMETERY

I frequently visit this cemetery as my father’s parents are interred here but I have never been able to locate the grave as they were buried there before the cemetery began to deteriorate and become the target for serious and sustained vandalism. I could be wrong but I suspect that the headstone no longer exists and when I searched online I did find a grave but while the names were correct [William and Brigit] I later discovered that the dates were incorrect. An aunt of mine, who died a few years ago, had promised to meet up and show me the actual grave but that never happened.

The cemetery has one of only two Christ-thorn bushes in Ireland (the other is in the Botanic Gardens).

Mount Jerome Cemetery & Crematorium is situated in Harold’s Cross on the south side of Dublin, Ireland. Since its foundation in 1836, it has witnessed over 300,000 burials. Originally an exclusively Protestant cemetery, Roman Catholics have also been buried there since the 1920s.

In the 1970s, the condition of the Cemetery began to deteriorate and in 1984 it was put into voluntary liquidation.

By the late 1990s, it had fallen into a serious state of neglect and was subjected to a high level of vandalism. I actually lived beside the cemetery in 1983-85 and almost every day I was amazed to see what was being stolen from the graves.

In 1998 the cemetery was purchased by a private enterprise it has undergone a complete reversal of fortune. The ongoing funds provided by a new Crematorium afforded the Cemetery the means to put in place a proper maintenance program to prevent it falling into decline again. Over time it is possible that the cemetery will become a major tourist attraction as has Glasnevin Cemetery.

ALDERMAN WILLIAM FRY OF 29 PEMBROKE PLACE

The Family Vault of Alderman Fry Pembroke Place 1857… “Until the day break and the shadows flee away” [Song of Solomon 2:17].

Until today I did not have much luck finding any information relating to Alderman Fry or his family. However, I now know that he was born in Dublin 9 June 1804 and died at 29 Pembroke Place 17 January 1857. His mother was Anna Maria Louisa Dawson Lawrence and his father was Thomas Fry. His wife was Evelina Brassington who was also born in 1804 and she died in 1875.

Many guides describe Mount Jerome as being one of the most interesting 19th-century cemeteries in Europe mainly because of the funerary architecture and statuary.

An alderman is a member of a municipal assembly or council in many jurisdictions founded upon English law. The term may be titular, denoting a high-ranking member of a borough or county council, a council member chosen by the elected members themselves rather than by popular vote, or a council member elected by voters.
