SEPTEMBER 2022

IN 2022 I HAD TO DELAY MY VISIT UNTIL SEPTEMBER

This year I did not bring my Sony equipment and I depended on a recently purchased Canon 5D MkIII that was never used by the original owner. Apparently, he won it as a prize many years ago. I should mention that I once had the original 5D and I still use the Canon 1Ds MkIII.

The Canon EOS 5D Mark III is a professional-grade 22.3 megapixels full-frame digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera made by Canon.

Succeeding the EOS 5D Mark II, the Mark III was announced on 2 March 2012. This date coincided with the 25th anniversary of the announcement of the first camera in the EOS line, the EOS 650, and was also Canon's 75th anniversary. The Mark III went on sale later in March with a retail price of $3,499 in the US, £2999 in the UK, and €3569 in the Eurozone.

On 25 August 2016, Canon announced the camera's successor, the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV.

For the first time I used the Canon GPS Receiver GP-E2. The Canon GPS Receiver GP-E2 can be connected to the camera via the accessory shoe or a USB cable. With a GPS logging function built-in, the Canon GP-E2 will log latitude, longitude, elevation, and the Universal Time Code - and allow viewing of camera movement on a PC after shooting. With it's built-in compass, the Canon GP-E2 receiver will also record camera direction when shooting, even when shooting vertically. The Canon GPS Receiver GP-E2 is compatible with the EOS-1D X and EOS 7Di as well as the EOS 5D Mark III.

BENNETSBRIDGE ROADKILKENNY SEPTEMBER 2022

I managed to explore a section of Bennetsbridge Road but did not travel as far as the village but I intend to visit next year when I am in the area.

Bennettsbridge is a village in County Kilkenny in Ireland. It is situated on the River Nore 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) south of Kilkenny city, in the centre of the county. Bennettsbridge is a census town, and has population of 745 as of the 2016 census.

The village is on the R700 road at a stone bridge crossing of the Nore between Kilkenny and Thomastown. It has become a craft centre in recent years, with several pottery and craft producers located at the old mill beside the weir.

The village is part of the parish of Tullaherin which contains an almost intact 9th-century round tower.

THE CHURCH OF ST JOHN THE EVANGELISTDUBLIN ROAD KILKENNY SEPTEMBER 2022

The church is often known as the O'Loughlin Memorial Church.

The Church of Saint John the Evangelist, or John's Church, is a Gothic Revival style church in Kilkenny, Ireland. The Church was designed by William Hague and built from 1903 to 1908 on the site of an earlier church located in the graveyard. The grounds are of little interest but it is worth viewing the interior of the building.

CORNER TOWER MAUDLIN STREETKILKENNY SEPTEMBER 2022

Situated on Maudlin Street, the structure was at the outer corner of a garden wall, and would represent the north-east corner of a wall enclosing the lower part of the St John’s suburb. Its overall dimensions are about 4m tall, and 2.2m in diameter, with walls 0.3m thick, and an open back towards the former garden (with short lengths of the connecting walls). There is an offset for a ‘parapet’, with a single row of slots at its base (probably for water run-off). Internally, there are indications of five blocked windows (or perhaps gun ports) at 1.7m above ground level, and 0.5 m square. It may well be of 16th-century date.

ST FRANCIS BRIDGEWOLFE TONE STREET KILKENNY SEPTEMBER 2022

Despite many protests and legal objections the St Francis Bridge in Kilkenny was opened in 2017 after massive cost overruns. The new bridge provides a direct route for cars and heavy vehicles right through the “Medieval Mile” of the city, splitting St Canice’s Cathedral from the rest of Kilkenny.

BEYOND THE STILEI ASSUMED THAT THERE WAS A RIGHT OF WAY

A stile is a structure or opening that provides people passage over or through a boundary via steps, ladders, or narrow gaps. Stiles are often built in rural areas along footpaths, fences, walls, or hedges that enclose animals, allowing people to move freely.

As there was a stile at the Mill I decided to cross and explore the surrounding area but as there was no obvious destination I decided to return to the mill.

ORIGINALLY ARCHERSGROVE MILLFENNESSEY'S MILL ON THE RIVER NORE IN KILKENNY

Sometime in 1891 Mr Fennessey, proprietor of the well-known seed warehouse, High Street, Kilkenny, and of the extensive nurseries convenient to Kilkenny City, leased the long-disused Archersgrove Mill, for the purpose of converting the premises into bone-crushing and linseed cake-crushing mills and perhaps sawmills. At the time it was hoped Fennessy’s enterprise would convert a silent ruin into a busy centre of employment.

MAUDLIN STREET KILKENNY FEATURING MAUDLIN CASTLE

The Hospital of St. Mary Magdalene in Kilkenny was opened sometime before 1327 (perhaps by William Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke in the early 13th century) and it quickly became one of the main leper houses in medieval Ireland. It was on the edge of the city and surrounded by high walls. The entrance was controlled through a gatehouse. It also had a chapel, graveyard and 50 acres of farmland. This hospital had a long association with St. John's Priory, Kilkenny.

SAINT JOHN'S GRAVEYARDDUBLIN ROAD KILKENNY SEPTEMBER 2022

When I first visited this old graveyard I noted that the colour of the gravestones was different to what I normally see in Irish graveyards [orange/brown rather than grey/white]. I assume that gravestones were covered in what was an orange algae, lichen or fungi however this visited I noticed that, in many cases, the orange material had been bleached pure white

THE POND AT KILKENNY CASTLEYET ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

This visit I noticed that the water was covered with a carpet of green and when I examined my photographs from 2021 it was much the same. After some research I discovered that there is an environmental problem as an invasive species of plant is hindering efforts to maintain the duck pond in Kilkenny’s Castle Park.

KILKENNY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCHNEW ROAD SEPTEMBER 2022

The main religion is Catholicism, however there are Church of Ireland, Presbyterian, Methodist, Jewish and other religious traditions living in Kilkenny

The Presbyterian Church in Ireland is the largest Presbyterian denomination in the Republic of Ireland, and the largest Protestant denomination in Northern Ireland. Like most Christian churches in Ireland, it is organised on an all-island basis, in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The church has approximately 210,000 members.

THOMAS WOODGATE MEMORIALMARCH 2021 AND SEPTEMBER 2022

I first photographed this memorial in March 2021 but forgot to publish the resulting images.

In 2021 I used a Sony 7RIV with a Sony PZ 28-135mm Lens and in 2022 I uses a Canon 5D MkIII with a Sigma 24-105mm Lens.

Thomas was from Callan in Co Kilkenny, the son of Edward and Hanora Woodgate of Mill Street, and until recently it was assumed that he was 18 when he signed up to the Royal Air Force in late 1918. He died on board RMS Leinster on 10 October 1918, when it was torpedoed by a German submarine close to the Kish Lighthouse while on its way to Holyhead.

EXPLORING WATERFORD ROADKILKENNY SEPTEMBER 2022

This was my first time to visit Waterford Road in Kilkenny. There are many attractive houses in the area and according to estate agents the average price is €315,000. However one property did sell for €1,550,000 in may 2022.

THIS IS NOT CROW'S WELLCANAL WALK IN KILKENNY JULY 2021 AND SEPTEMBER 2022

This series of images is from my July 2021 and September 2022 visits to Kilkenny.

This well is located on the Canal Walk on the bank of the River Nore. In 2018 a dog-walker told me that it is known as "Crow's Well" but at the time I believed that she may have been incorrect as my understanding is that Crow's Well Lock is at Fennessey's Mill. However, I was unable to locate a well at Fennessy's Mill [Archersgrove Mill] when I visited in September 2022. However, I recently discovered that Crow's well was identified as Spa Well on some old maps and that the well, at Fennessey's Mill, is so overgrown with briars and bushes that it is almost impossible to locate it.

TALBOT'S TOWERKILKENNY SEPTEMBER 2022

Talbot’s tower defended the south-west corner of Kilkenny’s Hightown; the wall to the north extends for 850m as far as the river Breagagh, that to the east for 350m to Kilkenny castle.

The tower was strategically sited to take advantage of a low hill and from its parapets there are extensive views in all directions, making it an extremely effective watch-tower.

In the 13th century William Marshall, the younger, was Lord of Leinster. He founded a monastery for the Dominicans, known as the Black Friars, or the Order of Preachers. The Order was founded by St. Dominic and its first house in Ireland was built in 1224, in Dublin. In the following year The Black Abbey was built in Kilkenny. Kilkenny was a walled town in the middle ages, and the Black Abbey was built outside the town wall in what is now known as Abbey Street.

ST PATRICK'S GRAVEYARDKILKENNY SEPTEMBER 2022

A picturesque graveyard containing a collection of markers of artistic design significance exhibiting high quality stone masonry. A number of markers dating to the late seventeenth century represent an important element of the archaeological heritage of Kilkenny while serving as a reminder of the mass house, later a Catholic chapel that existed on site until the late eighteenth century.

A STAND-UP PADDLE BOARD COMMUTEALONG THE RIVER NORE IN KILKENNY SEPTEMBER 2022

Modern standup paddleboarding began in the 1940s in Waikiki. John Ah Choy was a local Hawaiian who surfed, but as he got older and was unable to get up and down from his board, he would stand on his board from the break and paddle out with a canoe paddle to catch waves. His sons, Leroy and Bobby Ah Choy, and their friend, Duke Kahanamoku, started to mimic this while they taught surfing to visiting tourists. They did this as a way to keep an eye on surf students while also monitoring the incoming swell. They also utilized the vantage point of being out on the water to take pictures. As the style became popular with other surfers, it took on the name Beach Boy Surfing after the instructors, who were called Waikiki Beach Boys.
