Brazil became independent two hundred years ago and the purpose of this mural is to celebrate that event as well as the large community of Brazilian nationals now living in Ireland.

Some time ago I noticed some text at this location which proclaimed “Do Not Remove” and then at some later date I came across the very exciting “What Is Home” mural by Asbestos in Cork City. It was located on South Main Street and looked somewhat similar to the mural in this series of photographs.

The “Do Not Remove” project was the initiative of the Association of Brazilian Families in Ireland (AMBI) together with the Brazilian Embassy, Monteco Holdings Ltd, the owner of the Ormond Hotel site, and Dublin City Council. The artwork was a collaboration between Brazilian Artist Neto and Dublin Artist Asbestos.

The Ormond Hotel which featured in James Joyce’s Ulysses was derelict for many years but was purchased by Monteco Holdings for €2.5m and their €25 million redevelopment was expected to complete by the first quarter of 2020 but currently [11 November 2022] it is nowhere near completion.

Note: The overall site numbers 7-13 on Ormond Quay Upper and includes a protected structure at number 12. It adjoins number six, a national monument which dates to the 17th century.
