HAMILTON VIEW AND NEARBY

Sir William Rowan Hamilton LL.D, DCL, MRIA, FRAS (3/4 August 1805 – 2 September 1865) was an Irish mathematician, astronomer, and physicist. He was the Andrews Professor of Astronomy at Trinity College Dublin, and a director at Dunsink Observatory.

Hamilton’s scientific career included the study of geometrical optics, ideas from Fourier analysis, and his work on quaternions which made him one of the founders of modern linear algebra. He made major contributions in optics, classical mechanics and abstract algebra. His work was of importance to theoretical physics, particularly his reformulation of Newtonian mechanics, now called Hamiltonian mechanics. It is now central both to electromagnetism and to quantum mechanics.

This area of Ashtown has greatly changed since I last visited.

In April 2021 Union Investment, a German investor, confirmed a €200 million deal to acquire over 400 apartments and a health centre being developed by Sean Mulryan’s Ballymore Group at Royal Canal Park in Ashtown, Dublin 15. The 8th Lock residential has five sections ranging from four to 13 storeys high and it is expected that the various phases will be completed between October 2023 and March 2025.

In May 2020, Ballymore received planning approval for 435 residential homes at Royal Canal Park in Ashtown in Dublin 15.

Located on the site of the former Ormond Printworks on Ratoath Road, this mixed-use development will form Phase IV of Royal Canal Park and comprise 218 1-bed and 217 2-bed apartments and c.4,200 sq.m of commercial and amenity space. The development will also include public plazas, a healthcare centre, pharmacy, own-door offices and gym while 255 car parking spaces, electric vehicle charging points, disabled parking and nearly 950 bicycle parking spaces at surface and undercroft levels are also envisaged.

Situated within walking distances of existing key transport options, including Dublin Bus, cross city Luas service and Pelletstown rail station, residents of this canal-side location will enjoy a short commute to Dublin city centre. Residents will also benefit from public plazas, a landscaped central area of open space and the development’s proximity to the Royal Canal Greenway and Tolka Valley Park.

When this final phase is complete, the overall 162,000 sq m Royal Canal Park development will consist of over 1,630 residences, office space, cafes and retail units including an already operating Aldi supermarket.
