PHOTOGRAPHED 2016
This former (listed building)) Methodist church, at the Bradbury Place end of the University Road, was built circa 1865 to a design by WJ Barre.
Back in 2014 the building was on the market for £400,000 and after photographing it in 2016 I came across a two year old report in a local publication indicating that the Pub chain Wetherspoon had purchase the building for twice the asking price however they may have paid as close to £1.25m.
I was able to confirm that the pub chain had acquired two buildings – the building in my photographs plus a former JJB Sports on Royal Avenue. However, early in 2022 both properties were back on the market. The asking price for the church building was £750,000 when I last checked but it was expected that it would sell for close to £2m.
The Wetherspoon chain operated about 800 pubs across England and Ireland but they are plan to close 39 of them going forward.
