If you use this docking station it might interest you to learn that at the corners of Sandwith Street and Fenian Street there replica of the former Archer’s Garage, designed by Arnold Francis Hendy and completed in 1946.

On the June bank holiday weekend, 1999, the art deco, grade 1 listed garage on Fenian Street was illegally demolished by contractors working for the O’Callaghan hotel group. A public outcry followed, and while developer Noel O’Callaghan claimed this was the reason why he reconstructed the Garage, he was in fact ordered by Dublin City Council on threat of a €1,000,000 fine and/or imprisonment. The reconstruction is far from accurate to the original and I was more than a little disappointed having lived close to the original for about seven years.

THE LUAS TRAM STOP AT WINDY ARBOUR AND THE IMMEDIATE AREA

Windy Arbour, historically called Glassons, is a small suburban village in the Dundrum area of Dublin, Ireland. Situated between Dundrum and Milltown, along the banks of the Slang River (also Dundrum or Slann River).

Windy Arbour has a number of shops, a supermarket, post office, pharmacy and a bakery. It is also home to several takeaways and restaurants. There is a primary school in Columbanus Estate known as Our Lady’s National School, Clonskeagh. The area is served by Windy Arbour Luas stop and by the number 17, 44 and 61 bus routes.

This is not where I would have expected East James Street to be located. Anyway, the docking station is beside Miesian Plaza on Baggot Street.

In 2015 Dublin City Council granted permission, at the end of January, to ESB Commercial Properties Ltd for plans that included demolition of all 20th-century buildings on the block, the renovation and reuse of nine Georgian houses, and change of use of part of another.

The three-acre site comprises a city block, bounded by Lower Fitzwilliam Street, Upper Mount Street, James’s Street East and Lower Baggot Street, and includes ESB’s headquarters. To the best of my knowledge the original houses on James Street East were demolished in the 1950s.

GRANGEGORMAN UNIVERSITY CAMPUS – BROADSTONE GATE

BROADSTONE LUAS TRAM STOP

There was once a harbour at this location: Broadstone harbour’s location was chosen for its proximity to the markets and the law courts. Bolton Street was the preferred site, but high land prices and objections from local residents forced its relocation to Broadstome. The Kings Inns, designed by James Gandon, was built opposite the harbour and, like the Four Courts and Custom House, was designed with its frontage on a waterfront.

The Broadstone Gate provides a key access to the Grangegorman site and has been developed as part of the Luas Cross City works. It has been developed as a public plaza and the access provides a major linkage between Grangegorman and Dublin city. The plaza is situated off Constitution Hill on the site of the Old Royal Canal at the former Great Western Railway Station commonly known as Broadstone, and is now the most prominent entrance to the Grangegorman urban quarter.

Under the Grangegorman Masterplan, the primary urban path through Grangegorman – St Brendan’s Way acts as a link with the Broadstone Gate which reaches as far as Prussia Street. The link with Broadstone can also be seen as an extension to the 18th century historic spine of Dublin City which covered Dublin Castle across Grattan Bridge, along Capel Street/Bolton Street, Henrietta Street and King’s Inn.

When I photographed this the overall sponsor was JustEat today [2023] it is a company known as Now.

The scheme was announced by Dubin City Council in 2006 when JCDecaux received 72 free advertising spaces around Dublin in a 15-year deal in return for the advertising company’s funding of the project. Critics argued that the deal was an expensive one when compared to Copenhagen where companies pay to have their logos attached to the bicycle. 450 bicycle stands were installed in groups of ten and twenty in forty locations around Dublin from June 2009. The scheme was opposed by An Taisce who said it was “misuse of legislation by a local authority to facilitate a private development”.

The Dublinbikes scheme was launched on 13 September 2009, with around 150 ordinary cyclists embarking on their first ride behind John Tierney, Dublin City Manager, and Andrew Montague, a councillor who was representing the Lord Mayor of Dublin on the journey.

It was announced on 18 June 2014 that Coca-Cola Zero would become a commercial partner with Dublinbikes for three years. Starting at the end of June 2014, the brand was renamed Coca-Cola Zero Dublinbikes and the Coca-Cola Zero brand was added to each individual bike in return for investment in the scheme.

On 20 July 2017, Just Eat took over as the commercial partner for the next three years. Just Eat invested €2.25 million in the scheme over the three-year period. This is a 15% increase on the Coca-Cola Zero investment in order to help the profitability and expansion of the service. The brand was therefore renamed Just Eat dublinbikes and all 1,500 bikes had the new branding applied to them by August 2017. As part of the announcement, it was confirmed that an additional 15 stations would open in the city (predominantly around Grangegorman) and 100 bikes would be added to the network.

On 9 December 2020, Dublin City Council and JCDecaux announced that Now TV would become the next sponsor of Dublinbikes, in a deal worth €2.25 million over three years. The Now TV partnership came with the release of a new app that will allow users to release a bike from their smartphone.
