MEMORIAL ON THE WALL OF ST MARY’S CATHEDRAL IN LIMERICK<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I took this photograph back in 2016 in Limerick but could not remember where it was. A few days ago I rediscovered the photograph and was able to enhance it so that I could read the inscription I was also able to use a reverse search to find similar images and establish that the memorial is located at St Mary’s Cathedral in Limerick. It is on the wall on Nicholas Street,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Augustus Stafford (22 June 1811 \u2013 15 November 1857), also known as Augustus Stafford O’Brien-Stafford, was a British landowner and Conservative Party politician.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stafford was born in Walcot, Lincolnshire in 1811. He was the son of Stafford O’Brien and his wife Emma, daughter of Sir Gerard Noel, 2nd Baronet. His name initially was Augustus Stafford O’Brien.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He sat as a Member of Parliament for Northamptonshire North from 1841 until his early death in 1857. He was Secretary to the Admiralty under the Duke of Northumberland in Lord Derby’s 1852 government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was an active member of the Canterbury Association which he joined on 27 March 1848.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He died suddenly in Morrison\u2019s Hotel in Dublin in November 1857, while he was on his way back to Limerick from England. A committee was formed to raise funds for the window in Saint Mary\u2019s Cathedral as a public memorial to him in Limerick. The committee raised over \u00a31,500, and the rumour soon spread that the principal if not sole donor was Florence Nightingale \u2013 although her contribution amounted to three guineas, while the tenants and labourers of the Cratloe Estate contributed almost \u00a350.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
